Prostate Artery Embolization

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is an innovative, minimally invasive endovascular procedure performed by an interventional radiologist to treat the prostate without surgery. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and is intended to treat prostate adenoma.

Embolization Process

  • Catheter Insertion: The interventional radiologist inserts a 1.6 mm catheter into the artery at the wrist or groin.

  • Radiological Guidance: Under fluoroscopy, the catheter is guided to the small arteries supplying the prostate.

  • Blocking Blood Supply: Once the catheter is correctly positioned in the prostate artery, glue is injected to block the blood supply to the prostate arteries, causing the prostate to shrink and reduce in size, allowing urine to pass more easily.

Goals of Prostate Artery Embolization

Prostate Artery Embolization is intended to treat all urinary symptoms related to the prostate, such as:

Weak urine flow, frequent urination, including at night, urgency to urinate, partial emptying of the bladder, urinary incontinence.

The main advantage of this procedure is that the urethra and bladder neck are not affected, so it does not cause urinary incontinence or retrograde ejaculation.

Embolization Process Steps

  1. Pre-Procedure Consultation: A meeting with the interventional radiologist for consultation.

  2. On the Day of the Procedure: The patient is taken to the angiography room and given an IV infusion.

  3. Anesthesia and Sedation: The procedure is painless, but sedation is available for light sleep. In most cases, a urinary catheter is not needed.

  4. Performing the Procedure: The procedure takes about an hour and a half on average.

  5. Monitoring and Recovery: After the procedure, the patient is monitored for about two hours before going home. Recovery time is much shorter compared to surgery.

Results of Prostate Artery Embolization

The procedure is effective in about 80% of cases, according to more than 300 articles in the medical literature. In case of failure, the option of classical surgical treatment remains available.

Prostate Artery Embolization is an effective and safe procedure that offers many benefits to patients suffering from urinary symptoms related to prostate adenoma, with quick recovery time and low risk of complications.
