Percutaneous Ablation (through the skin)

Percutaneous Ablation is a minimally invasive radiological intervention performed by an interventional radiologist to destroy a primary cancerous tumor or metastasis, such as in the liver or kidneys. The destruction is carried out using heat (radiofrequency or microwave) or cold (cryotherapy). The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia.

Procedure Steps:

  • Puncture Stage: The radiologist performs a puncture through the skin under ultrasound or CT guidance, inserting one or more needles positioned within the tumor.

  • Control of Destruction Volume: During the intervention, the destruction volume is well controlled using the scanner to ensure the healthy margins of the organ are not affected.

  • Postoperative Pain: When the lesion is close to the peripheral coverings of organs (such as the liver capsule or the lung pleura), the ablation can cause pain that lasts for several days. The pain is well managed with intravenous painkillers during hospitalization and subsequently with intravenous or oral painkillers at home.

Advantages:

  • No Scar: Percutaneous ablation does not leave a scar and does not require subsequent resection surgery.

  • Short Hospitalization: The procedure is carried out during a short hospital stay (one night) or, if possible, in an outpatient clinic.

  • Quick Recovery: After the procedure, the first five days are marked by fatigue, and in some cases, moderate pain may occur, which is relieved by regular oral painkillers. The pain lasts about seven days. Personalized follow-up supports the patient during this period for effective pain management.

Complications:

Rare: Complications are rare and mainly include bleeding and injuries to neighboring organs. Multiple precautions are taken during the surgery to avoid these.

The interventional scanner helps to minimize these risks.

Return to Normal Activity:

Depending on your professional needs, recovery is possible as early as the third to fifth day after the procedure.
